The company that built a global entertainment colossus by rewriting the Hollywood script now finds itself grappling with a familiar plotline — a creative slump.
Netflix Inc., which evolved from delivering movies by mail to producing buzzy original series such as House of Cards and Stranger Things, has struggled lately to come up with series and films that capture the cultural zeitgeist. Worse, the creative drought comes as Netflix’s chief rival, Alphabet Inc.’s YouTube, has increased its share of TV viewing time in the US, and competitors Apple TV and HBO Max garner critical acclaim.
